Backflow Preventer Testing & Certification in New Jersey

Annual backflow testing isn’t just a good idea – it’s a legal requirement for nearly every property connected to public water in New Jersey. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) mandates it. Your local township mandates it. Your water provider – whether that’s New Jersey American Water, the Mount Laurel MUA, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority, or any one of dozens of other suppliers – mandates it. Fail to comply and you face fines, service interruptions, and the kind of liability nobody wants.

South Jersey Backflow makes the entire process effortless. We schedule at your convenience, test with certified calibrated equipment, complete every piece of paperwork, and submit your results directly to the appropriate agencies – all in a single visit that typically takes under 10 minutes per device. You don’t lift a finger.

What Is a Backflow Preventer – and Why Does It Need Annual Testing?

A backflow preventer is a mechanical plumbing device that stops contaminated or non-potable water from reversing direction and entering your building’s clean water supply or the public water system. It’s your property’s last line of defense against a backflow event.

Backflow events happen when there’s a sudden pressure drop in the water main – during a main break, a major fire hydrant draw, or a surge in neighborhood demand. Without a functioning backflow preventer, that drop in pressure can pull water backwards through your irrigation lines, boiler connections, or fire suppression pipes and inject it – along with fertilizers, bacteria, chemicals, or sewage – into the potable water supply used by your entire neighborhood.

The only way to verify your device will function properly when it matters is to test it under controlled conditions using calibrated pressure gauges. Internal valve springs degrade. Rubber seats harden. Check valves accumulate mineral deposits and debris. Annual testing catches these problems before they become a public health emergency — or a compliance violation that shuts off your water supply.

Who Needs Backflow Testing in New Jersey?

If your property has any of the following, you are required by New Jersey law to have annual backflow testing performed by a licensed tester:

  • Lawn irrigation or sprinkler systems
  • Swimming pool or hot tub fill lines
  • Fire suppression or sprinkler systems
  • Boiler loops, hydronic heating, or HVAC makeup water systems
  • Commercial kitchen equipment with direct water connections
  • Industrial process water lines or chemical dosing connections
  • Soda machines, ice makers, or beverage dispensers in commercial settings
  • Sewer jetting trucks or other municipal utility equipment

This requirement applies to residential homes, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, schools, public buildings, HOAs, apartment complexes, and municipal utility departments. If you are unsure whether your property requires testing, contact us and we’ll walk you through the requirements for your specific township and water provider.

Our Step-by-Step Testing Process

We make backflow testing as painless as possible. Here’s exactly what happens from the moment you call us:

Step 1 — Schedule: We work around your availability. Most residential tests are completed in under 10 minutes; multi-unit commercial properties are typically done in a single visit with consolidated reporting.

Step 2 — On-Site Testing: Our certified tester arrives with state-approved calibrated pressure gauges. We evaluate shut-off valve function, relief valve operation, pressure loss tolerances, check valve sealing, and any signs of internal wear or debris.

Step 3 — Certification Paperwork: We complete the official test report form required by your municipality or water provider. All forms are completed on-site and signed by our licensed tester.

Step 4 — Submission: We submit your test results directly to your local township, water authority, and/or water provider — including digital submission where accepted and mailed originals where required. You receive a PDF copy by email.

Step 5 — Annual Reminder: We track your renewal date and reach out before your next deadline so you’re never caught by a compliance notice.

What Happens If My Device Fails?

A failed backflow test is not the end of the world — and it doesn’t automatically mean you need a full replacement device. In the majority of cases, the cause of failure is a worn internal component: a hardened rubber seat, a stuck check valve, debris lodged in the mechanism, or a degraded O-ring. These are all repairable on the same visit in most cases.

South Jersey Backflow carries OEM rebuild kits for all major device brands and models on-site. When a device fails during testing, we can often complete the rebuild, reassemble, and retest for certification in the same appointment — saving you the cost and delay of a full replacement unit.
