Backflow Preventer Rebuilds & Repairs Across All of New Jersey
Your backflow preventer failed a test. Or it’s leaking. Or it’s been years since anyone looked at the internal components and you’re starting to get notices from your township. Before you resign yourself to the cost and disruption of a full device replacement, know this: in the vast majority of cases, a certified backflow preventer rebuild is all you need.
South Jersey Backflow has been rebuilding backflow preventers for residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers across New Jersey since 2004. We carry OEM replacement parts for all major manufacturers on-site, so in most cases we can diagnose, disassemble, rebuild, reassemble, and retest your device in a single visit – at 30 to 50 percent of what a replacement would cost you.
What Is a Backflow Preventer Rebuild?
A rebuild is a complete internal restoration of your existing backflow device. Rather than replacing the entire unit, our technician disassembles the device body, removes all worn or damaged internal components, thoroughly cleans and descales the housing, installs brand-new OEM parts, reassembles the device to manufacturer specifications, and immediately performs a certified backflow test to confirm it’s functioning correctly.
The components we replace during a rebuild typically include:
- Check valve assemblies (first and second check)
- Rubber seals, O-rings, and seat discs
- Springs, poppets, and diaphragms
- Relief valve internals
- Test cock assemblies and washers
- Shut-off valve packing (when accessible)
The result is a device that performs like new – with all workmanship and parts backed by a one-year warranty – at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Signs Your Backflow Preventer Needs a Rebuild
Most devices show warning signs well before they fail a formal inspection. Contact us if you notice any of the following:
- Your device failed its annual certification test
- Water is dripping or discharging from the relief valve
- You see visible corrosion, mineral deposits, or rust on external components
- Shut-off valve handles are stiff, partially stuck, or won’t fully close
- You’ve received a compliance notice from your township or water provider
- Your device is more than 5 years old and has never had internal service
- You notice reduced water pressure downstream of the device
Any of these symptoms typically indicates internal wear that a rebuild can resolve. The sooner it’s addressed, the less likely you are to face a full replacement or a water shutoff.

Frequently Asked Questions — Backflow Rebuilds
How long does a rebuild take? Most RPZ and DCVA rebuilds take 30–90 minutes depending on device size and access. We’ll confirm timing when we schedule.
Do I need to be present? Only if the device is located inside your property. For outdoor and exterior-mounted units, we can rebuild and test without you on-site.
Can all devices be rebuilt? Most devices can be rebuilt as long as the main body casting is structurally intact. We’ll inspect and confirm before doing any work.
Will I get paperwork for my township? Yes. We complete and submit the test report to your local authority on the same day and send a digital copy to you.
